Classic Siclian teatro dei pupi marionette shows in Palermo

For an early evening of traditional fun for all ages, hunt down a teatro dei pupi (marionette theater) to watch professional puppeteers stage elaborate stories from the Charlemagne/Orlando sagas or tales of Saracen warriors (for a long time, this was the poor Sicilian's version of theater).

Mimmo Cuticchio (who actually appeared in The Godfather III) puts on 6:30pm shows Saturdays and Sundays (and the occasional Thursday or Friday at 6 or 7pm) at the Teatro di Via Bara at Via Bara all'Olivella 95 (tel. +39-091-323-400, www.figlidartecuticchio.com).

Nino Cuticchio does 9pm performances Fridays to Sundays in winter (but irregularly of late) at the Teatro Ippogrifo at Vicolo Ragusi 6—the second block off Corso V. Emanuele west of the Quattro Canti (tel. +39-091-329-194 or 333-897-9443).

The Argento family presents shows daily at 6pm at their Opera dei Pupi di Vincenzo Argento e figli at the Palazzo Asmundo across from the Cathedral, via Pietro Novelli 1–3 and Via Vittorio Emanuele, 445 (tel. +39-091-651-9022-, www.palazzoasmundo.com).

A new entry on the scene (as of 2001) is the Teatrino delle Beffe, with regular performances at Via G. de Spuches 7, in the northern part of town a few blocks west of Via della Libertà (tel. +39-339-240-2542, www.teatrodellebeffe.it).
