The Italian Marches
I promise to write soon about this region that stretches from the mountains of the Appenines to the shores of Adriatic, that borders on Emilia-Romagna to the north, Abruzzo to the south, and Umbria to the west (with kisses across narrow borders with Tuscany and Lazio)—and shares elements of all five.
The regional capital is the coastal city of Ancona—but fare more interesting is the provincial capital of Urbino to the north, a city-sized hilltown with lots of great art (the great painter Raphael and the Renaissance architect Bramante both came from here).
For now, here is a review of the Castel Montegridolfo, a castle converted intoa hotel overlooking the Emilia-Romagna border.
