"Excellent home cooking, modest prices." So declares the menu of this simple trattoria near the train station, and they live up to their promise.

It's one of Palermo's most outstanding values. With six paper-spread tables (the family occupying one) in a little room where the TV is always on, the decor ain't much, but this is exactly the sort of locals' joint we love searching out.

If you don't want tortellini panna e prosciutto (meat-stuffed pasta in a cream and prosciutto sauce), try spaghetti alle vongole (clams), or bolognese (ragù). Secondi are simple, including involtini (veal rolled around a bready filling), costatine di agnello (mutton chops), or arrosto panato (breaded veal shop).

The wide selection of pizze are all made with fresh buffalo mozzarella.
