Money & Shopping (cont'd)
<< back
Till - Register.
Where you go fork over your pounds for pounds of clothing (hopefully some
outerwear mixed in with the unmentionables). Before you go to pay, however,
be sure to see what I wrote about conversion rates in the "Money" section
above. You never know when it might save you from purchasing a $90 petticoat
("But it goes so well with my new suspenders!" "Uh, Jim. Those aren't
suspenders.")
Trainers -
Sneakers. This won't be as difficult a term to remember as it would have
been a few years ago due to the glut of advertising in America for ridiculously
expensive "cross-trainers" sneak ers that are shown flying around the
screen in fast-paced commercials with lots of rock music, basketball playing
and weight-lifting, and sports celebrity spokespersons looking very mean
at the camera and telling you what you can go do with yourself.
Trousers -
Pants. Finally! Some outerwear to put on over your new garter belt.
Turn-ups -
Cuffs. I mention this only for tailoring purposes.
V.A.T. -
Value Added Tax. (See entry in "Money" above).
Vest - Men's
undershirt, or a t-shirt in general. if you want the bit of a three-piece
suit that goes between your jacket and your dress shirt (or if you want
what is now that 80s' retro look), ask for a "waistcoat."
Waistcoat -
Vest, the sort that you button and where the back is made out of a different,
shinier material than the front (I've never really understood that).
