Modern art in Amsterdam

If you're into modern art, from Impressionism on to contemporary, spend a morning at the Stedelijk—which reopend in 2010 after a seven-year hiatus as the "Temporary Stedelijk" in its old quarters, though it is still awaiting the opening of its full, renovated, expanded home.

The permanent collections and regularly staged exhibitions highlight many movements and styles of the past century. Featured artists include Picasso, Chagall, Cézanne, Monet, Calder, Oldenburg, Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Man Ray.

Of particular interest are Gerrit Rietveld's Red Blue Chair and paintings by Mondrian—two major forces in the Dutch abstract De Stijl movement, which prefaced the Bauhaus and modernist schools.

This museum also has a large collection by the Russian Kazimir Malevich, who experimented with supersaturated color in a style he called Suprematism. The recently restored building itself is a stylish 1895 example of the northern neo-Renaissance.
