"When this country was Yugoslavia, there were six republics, five nations, four languages, and three religions—but there was no "two," because there was only one party: Tito." So says Jože Kuralt, a driver/guide from the lake resort of Bled. As this slogan spelled out in white stones on the hillside above Nova Goricia attests, "Nas Tito" (Our Tito) is still looked back upon fondly by many Yugoslavians. Most Slovenes I've met seem to have preferred things as they were before 1991. There was no theft, no jealousy, no cutthroat competition at work or in school. Nobody had much, but at least everybody had enough.
