The somber marble staricase leading from the entrance up to the reading room of Ljubljana's Narodna in Univerzitetna Knjižica (National and University Library), showcases Jože Plečnik penchant for the Neoclassical that always crept into his otherwise Art Nouveau sensibilities. Plečnik was nothing if not a high-concept architect. The idea here was that you start in the tomb-dark of the entryway, and it slowly gets lighter and more open as you climb these forbidding stairs—the proportions of which are purposefully designed to make for a slow and difficult climb, symbolizing the great effort necessary to attain knowldege (though if the road to knowledge is so darn difficult to begin with, why did Jože feel it was his job to make it that much harder?). All of this leads up to the entrance to a long, airy reading room with funky chandeliers at the top of the stairs, where they keep the books and knowledge can finally be attained. Well, it can be attained by anyone bearing an electronic keycard to get in (those came well after Plečnik's time, though undoubtedly he would have approved). University students are the only ones who have those, so if you want to get inside for a peek, you'll have to follow someone in.
